Gutter Guards vs. Repeat Cleaning: The 5-Year Math

On a block lined with plane trees, two cleanings a year adds up. Here is how that compares with guards over five years, using local prices, plus a calculator for any house.

The example house

150 feet of gutter on a tree-lined block

A typical home has 125 to 200 feet of gutter (Everlast Gutters' Jersey City price page, 2026), so the example uses 150 feet. Prices come from Jersey City price pages: cleaning at Ned Stevens' Jersey City page, 2026 and CleanPro Gutter Cleaning's Jersey City page, 2026, and guards at Everlast Gutters' Jersey City price page, 2026.

On blocks lined with London planes and sycamores, one cleaning rarely lasts the season. The seed balls turn brown in fall and stay on the tree into winter (Oregon Department of Forestry), so many downtown houses need a second visit. That is the scenario where the comparison gets close.

Five years, side by side

The table

ScenarioPrice usedFive-year cost
One cleaning a year$183–$365 per visit (Ned Stevens' Jersey City page, 2026)$915–$1,825
Two cleanings a year$183–$365 per visit (Ned Stevens' Jersey City page, 2026)$1,830–$3,650
Two cleanings a year$249–$499 per visit (CleanPro Gutter Cleaning's Jersey City page, 2026)$2,490–$4,990
Guards on 150 ft$15–$25 per foot (Everlast Gutters' Jersey City price page, 2026)$2,250–$3,750, paid once

Arithmetic: per-visit price × visits per year × 5; guards = 150 ft × price per foot. Illustrations, not quotes.

Reading the result

When guards come out ahead, and when they don't

  • Two cleanings a year: five years of cleaning ($1,830–$4,990) lands in the same range as guards ($2,250–$3,750). Past five years, the guards' one-time cost keeps getting spread thinner while cleaning keeps adding up.
  • One cleaning a year: five years of cleaning ($915–$1,825) stays cheaper than guards. A house away from big street trees is often in this group.
  • Guards are not zero upkeep. Debris can sit on top of mesh, and conductor heads and leaders still clog. The calculator below has room for occasional checks.

Your own numbers

Filling in the calculator for a real house

  • Feet of gutter: add up the length of every roof edge that has a gutter, front and back. A row of 25-foot rowhouse fronts is a short run; a frame two-family with gutters on both sides and the rear can pass 150 feet.
  • Cleanings per year: count how often the gutters actually overflowed or needed clearing last year. Under big plane trees, two is common; away from large trees, one may do.
  • Cleaning price: use a real quote if there is one; otherwise the local per-visit ranges above.
  • Guard price per foot: from a quote, or the local $15–$25 range. Fine micro-mesh on a tall building tends to sit higher.
  • Checks with guards: add a visit every year or two to clear what sits on top and flush the leaders, especially on box gutters and conductor heads.

Beyond the math

What the numbers leave out

Fewer ladder visits mean less disruption on a narrow lot and fewer people on the roof. On the other hand, box gutters inside a cornice don't always suit guards, and a guard on a gutter that already leaks or sags only hides the problem. The gutter guards page compares guard types for plane-tree debris, and the gutter cleaning page covers timing.

Guards and cleaning questions

Do guards change how often leaders need clearing?

They keep most debris out of the gutter, so less reaches the leaders, but fine material and anything that lands in a conductor head can still build up. Leaders on guarded gutters still benefit from an occasional flush.

Is the national guard price range relevant in Jersey City?

As a ceiling, yes. National figures run $15 to $45 per foot installed (HomeGuide, Oct 2025), while Jersey City price pages list $15 to $25. Premium micro-mesh systems on tall buildings can push a local quote toward the higher national figure.

Two cleanings a year, five years: about what guards cost once.

That's the local math on a plane-tree block. With one cleaning a year, cleaning stays cheaper.
